Ing. Joseph Akowuah is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana. His research focuses on post-harvest engineering, stored grain protection, and grain handling and processing to mitigate post-harvest loss and food waste in Sub-Saharan Africa. He has over 10 years of experience in teaching, research, and extension work and is involved in various collaborative research and extension works with local and international experts in the area of postharvest loss and stored-product management. He has collaborated on various extension works involving field demonstration and training and has worked with post-harvest experts to provide training to over 1000 beneficiaries involving farmers, grain aggregators, extension agents, warehouse operators, and other stakeholders in the maize value-chain on post-harvest loss mitigation. He is one of the Co-PI’s of the KNUST’s team currently working with the Consortium for Innovation in Post-harvest Loss and Food Waste Reduction, a Rockefeller Foundation and Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research founded project which aims to promote research, outreach, and capacity building to increase the quality and quantity of food and nutrition in the world. He is also a member of the research team at KNUST working with the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for the Reduction of Post-harvest Loss of maize in Ghana. Being student-centered, Ing. Akowuah also serves as one of the pioneer faculty advisors to the Engineers Without Border (EWB) KNUST chapter, and working with the Iowa State University Chapter of EWB, he has been mentoring and providing technical support to students in both chapters to implement a couple of community-based engineering projects at the Ullo Traditional Area in the Upper West Region of Ghana. He has also mentored and supported two student start-up companies in Ghana, Sesi Technologies Limited and G2Josh Evergreen Company Limited.  Ing. Akowuah is a registered professional engineer and has consulted for several local and international organisations to provide training and technical assistance on various post-harvest related projects.
