Kofi Agyekum (Ph.D) is an Associate Professor of Building Performance and Sustainability at the Department of Construction Technology and Management, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana. He holds BSc (Hons), MPhil, and Ph.D. degrees in Building Technology. He is a Commonwealth Academic Fellow (obtained at the University of Loughborough, UK).
Prof. Agyekum has expertise spanning building pathology, circularity, design for deconstruction, design for adaptability, design for maintainability, green buildings, and sustainability. With a background in building technology, he bridges the gap between scientific research and practical applications in the built environment. His work focuses on environmental design strategies that enhance building performance, durability, and reslilence while advancing circular economy principles in construction. He has published widely and contributed to international discourse on green building innovation, sustainable materials, and adaptive design practices.
Beyond academia, Prof. Agyekum is also recognized as an Environmental Design Consultant, advising on projects that integrate sustainabiity, circular design, and resource efficiency. He actively collaborates with industry, policymakers, and global networks to promote net-zero construction practices and future-ready building systems. He is a research Fellow at the Brew Hammond Energy Centre, KNUST, where he leads the Green Building Team. He is also a fellow at the Responsible Artifical Intelligence Lab at KNUST. Through teaching, research, and consultancy, he is committed to shaping the next generation of professionals and advancing a more sustainable, adaptable, and circular built environment.
Prof. Agyekum is affiliated to severl professional bodies. He is IFC EDGE Certification Trainer of Traniers, He is a professional Project Manager obtained from the Project Management Institute, He is also a Chartered Quantity Surveyor with the Ghana Institution of Surveyors. Furthermore, he is a Principal Engineer (P.Eng) with the Institution of Engineering and Technology Ghana. Other professional affiliations include being a Member of: Association of Researchers in Construction Safety, Health and Well-being, Global Sustainable Futures Network, Emerald Literati Network, Ghana Institute of Construction, Publication Integrity and Ethics, International Building Perfoemance Simulation Association, International Society for Development and Sustainability, and Professional Association of Building Surveyors.
Currently, Kofi serves as Associate Editor for Journal of Engineering, Design and Technology (a Q1 journal hosted by Emerald Publishing), Green Technologies and Sustainability (a Q1 journal hosted by Elsevier), and PLOS ONE (a Q1 journal). He is also an Academic Editor for Academia Engineering. Furthermore, he serves as a Reviewer Board member for Buildings, a Q1 journal hosted by MDPI, and Smart and Sustainable Built Environment, also a Q1 journal hosted by Emerald Publishing. He is a recognized peer reviewer and mentor and holds certificates to that effect from the Web of Science Academy. Kofi has currently reviewed over seven hundred (700+) academic manuscripts across 85 recognized journals like Safety Science (Elsevier), Journal of Building Engineering (Elsevier), Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice (ASCE), Journal of Architectural Engineering (ASCE); Construction Innovation (Emerald), and Engineering, Construction and Architectural Management (Emerald), among others.
Kofi is a research active academic with publications in top-ranked journals in construction-related disciplines and has published a good number of quality research works. These include four (4) co-authored books, four (4) co-edited book, twenty-two (22) co-authored book chapters, over 250 (250) peer-reviewed journal papers, and over fifty (50) papers in peer-reviewed conference proceedings. His publications can be found in top-ranked journals like Automation in Construction (Elsevier-Q1), Environmental Impact Assessment (Q1-Elsevier), Safety Science (Elsevier-Q1); Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice (ASCE-Q1); Journal of Building Engineering (Elsevier-Q1); Engineering, Construction and Architectural Management (Emerald-Q1); sustainability (MDPI-Q1), Case Studies in Construction Materials (Elsevier-Q1), etc. His research works have benefited from funds from organizations like the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.
Over the years, Prof. Agyekum has ganered a good number of global awards and recognitions. Among these are the following:
- Recognition, 2025- Recognized as Associate Editor by Emerald Publishing for helping Journal of Engineering, Design and Technology to reach a Q1 status.
- Recognition, 2025- Among Top 10 published authors for the Middle East and Africa (MEA) Region in 2024 for Emerald Publishing.
- W099 Jimmie Hinze Best Paper Prize, 2024: My co-authored paper titled ‘Immersive Technologies (ImTs) for health and safety management in the construction industry: A systematic review of enablers, application and challenges’ won this award at the 2024 People in Construction (W123) and Safety, Health and Wellbeing in Construction (W099) International Conference held at KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana.
- Emerald Citation of Excellence Award, 2024: My co-authored paper titled ‘Prioritizing the principles of circular economy among built environment professionals, Built Environment Project and Asset Management, is recognized as one of the most highly cited and highly influential papers published in 2023.
- Emerald Citation of Excellence Award, 2024: My co-authored paper titled ‘Implementing the principles of circular economy in the construction industry: exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses’, Construction Innovation is recognized as one of the most highly cited and highly influential papers published in 2023.
