Research Areas/Interests
Ray Bright Voegborlo has a PhD in Analytical Chemistry and currently an Associate Professor at the Department Chemistry, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi. His interest is in a wide range of areas concerning analytical instrumentation in Environmental and other related areas especially Heavy Metals and Pesticides and other toxic residues in food. He has enormous experience in the installation, operation and maintenance/servicing of many laboratory instruments especially advanced instruments including AAS, GC with FID, ECD, FPD and GC/MS, HPLC and LC/MS/MS. He has trained laboratory staff in analytical techniques for Pesticide Residues and Trace Metal Analysis in Food, Water and Soil. He is currently engaged mainly in mercury contamination of fish and the environment using Mercury Analyzer for total mercury and GC with ECD for methylmercury. Studies include the sorption of mercury on different types of soils close to artisanal mining activities and human exposure to mercury through fish consumption. His research also looks at occupational exposure of artisanal gold miners to mercury. His interest spans Environmental Analysis, Heavy Metals in Food and Environment, Soil and Water Chemistry; Pesticide Residues in Food and Environment.
He has been responsible for preparing laboratory manuals for teaching assists in laboratory classes.
He collaborates with industry especially the Pharmaceutical Industries and trains staff in analytical instrumentation. He assists in writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the analysis of samples for many test methods. He engages and undertakes training in Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ) and Performance Qualification (PQ) for equipment validation to establish documented evidence that the equipment are correctly installed, operates according to requirements and performs safely in order to offer a high degree of quality assurance. This is very critical in the Pharmaceutical, Medical and Clinical Industries. He has also been involved in Water Quality Analysis using Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater. He is able to set up Water Testing Labs if required. He has served on Technical Committees for a couple of establishments including the Ghana Standards Authority. He has worked as a consultant for the Quality Control Division of the COCOBOD for several years and assisted in the establishment of the Pesticides Residues Laboratory including training. He has been a resource person for the hands on training in the PACN/RSC International Workshop in GC-MS Analytical Technique since 2015. A valuable member for any research group working in the stated areas especially Analytical Techniques and Instrumentation; and Food Safety. Current research interests include Formaldehyde contamination of Food and the Environment, Petroleum Hydrocarbons Contamination of the Environment
