Dr Isaac Okyere BSC (Human Biology) MB ChB FWACS FGCS
He is a Senior Lecturer: Department of Surgery, School of Medicine and Dentistry, College of Health Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana. He is the Foundation and current Head of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Unit of the Department of Surgery. He is Foundation Head and Consultant Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi, Ghana. He established the Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery unit of the directorate of surgery of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi -Ghana. He is the First Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon in Kumasi and also the first to perform open heart surgery in Kumasi at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana. He is the foundation lecturer for cardiothoracic surgery at the Department of Surgery, of the School of Medicine and Dentistry of the College of Health Sciences. He is currently the Deputy Country Representative or the Vice-Chairman of the Ghana Chapter of the West African College of Surgeon. He is a Fellow of both the West African College of Surgeons and the Ghana College of Surgeons. He is an examiner at the Membership Examination in Surgery of the Ghana College of and Surgeons. He is Small-Boudreau Cardiac Surgery Scholar of the Boston Children’s Hospital, USA. He had his BSC (Human Biology) and the MB ChB at the School of Medical Sciences, KNUST in 1998 and 2001 respectively. Then underwent residency training in General Surgery of the West African Postgraduate Training at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and passed his Membership in General Surgery in 2006. He was a Fellow in General Surgery for 6 months in the same Hospital until he went to do his senior surgery fellowship in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the National Cardiothoracic centre at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra under Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng under the West African Postgraduate Surgery Training Program passing. He passed his fellowship exams in 2011. He underwent further training in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in USA, UK, INDIA, CHINA, BELGIUM and South Africa before returning to the Kumasi at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. He had further elective training at: The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, UK under Mr Enock Akowuah and Mr Joe Dunning, the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery of the University of the Free State, South Africa under Professor Francis Smit, the Missions Hospital in Durgapur, West Bengal, India, under Drs. Satyajit Bose and Chatterjee, the Innova Children’s Hospital and Research Centre in Hyderabad, India under Dr Konas Murthy, the Bilroth Hospitals in Chennai/Madras, India under Dr S. Thiagarajamuthy, Professor Francis Fynn Thompson of the Boston Children’s Hospital, USA, Professor –Marath Aubyn and Dr Emily Farkin of the Cardiostart International, USA, Professor De-Geest of the Aalst Cardiovascular Institute, Belgium and Dr Wong of the Guangdong Cardiovascular Centre, China.
His research interest includes cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery in developing countries and has published moderately in this area and presented papers extensively at international and national conferences collaborating with both local and international scholars.
Married to Dr Perditer Okyere, Senior Lecturer: KSMD-KNUST, Senior Physician Specialist and Nephrologist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital with three children. I am a Christian, a Presiding Elder and a Principal Officer of the church of Pentecost. Reading and listening to Gospel Music are my hobbies.
