Research Areas/Interests
Over the past nine years she has been involved in research activities on the aged (among poor
older people in Ghana) including issues on their basic health care needs, health information
seeking behaviour and the prevalence, nature and factors associated with financial,
transportation and communication barriers to formal health care utilization. The
recommendations made to the aged, their family members, healthcare practitioners and policy
formulators focus on the provision of adequate information, addressing barriers that the aged
encounter in their quest to use health care.
She has also been involved in research work on occupational health and safety in the informal
sector for the past nine years. Despite the critical role the informal sector plays in the
economy of Ghana, the unfavourable working environment poses risk to informal sector
workers. Informal sector workers exposure to hazards with inadequate protection makes them
vulnerable to work-related injuries and diseases. Several publications have emanated from
her study of occupational health and safety among informal sector workers (welders,
fishmongers, bakers, drivers, beauticians etc) one of the publications focused on the role of
planning in improving upon the working environment of informal sector workers.
