Dr Kwaku Gyamfi Oppong joined the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi in 2021 as a full time Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and is a Senior Specialist Pharmacist at the Child Health Directorate of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi.
He teaches various course in pharmacy practices such as pathophysiology and therapeutics in tropical diseases, renal diseases, pain, cardiovascular diseases and infectious diseases. He supervises a number of undergraduate and graduate research works in the university.
He is currently the Coordinator for the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Courses in hospital practice at the department.
He is passionate about the quality of medicines and their clinical outcome for his patients. He does this through effective pharmacovigilance practice with support from the Food and Drugs Authority and other stakeholders.
He is a strong advocate the establishment of quality control laboratories in hospitals to help curb the menace of spurious, substandard, fake, falsified and falsely labelled(SSFFF) medicines.
His research interest and practice is in paediatric pharmacy practice, paediatric nephrology,pharmacovigilance, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, cardiovascular and tropical diseases.
Dr. Kwaku Gyamfi Oppong attended Prempeh College for his secondary education and graduated with distinction in 1999. He graduated from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi in 2005 with Honours in Bachelor of Pharmacy degree(BPharm).
In 2006, he passed the Ghana Pharmacy Practice Qualifying Examinations (GPPQE) to practice and joined the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana.
In June 2007, in joined Vicdoris Pharmaceuticals Ltd as a Medical Representative to market medicines from Denk Pharma GmBH, Macleods,Tablet India,Pharma-Dor and other portfolio marketed by the company. He rose to become a Sector Manager and later the Ashanti Regional Manager .
He also worked with mPharma Ghana Ltd as a Senior Associate and spearheaded the establishment of the Ashanti regional office in Kumasi.
He has also worked in Community Pharmacies for a couples of years.
Dr Oppong later joined the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital as a Pharmacist at the Child Health Directorate. Through hard work he rose to become Senior Specialist Pharmacist. In 2019 he was appointed as the Acting Pharmacy Manager for the Child Health Directorate until he resigned to join KNUST in 2021.
Dr. Oppong pursued other interests and academic programmes while working. He obtained a Master of Public Health(MPH) in 2010 , a Master of Philosophy in Clinical Pharmacology(MPhil) in 2016, a Doctor Pharmacy in 2020 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi –Ghana. He also pursued his Fellowship in Clinical Pharmacy at the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists from 2013 to 2019.
Dr. Oppong was a Part-time Lecturer in Pharmacology in the Departments of Physician Assistantship Studies, Dental Therapy and Nursing School at the Garden City University College, Kenyasi-Kumasi from 2015 to 2020. He was aslo a part-time lecturer in the department of pharmacy practice, KNUST from 2019.
He also taught Pharmacology in the School of Nursing at the Wisconsin International University, Kumasi campus.
Dr. Oppong enjoys singing and listening to hymns , choral music and loves to watch athletics and football.
