Profile

Lawrence Guodaar is a Lecturer at the Department of Geography and Rural Development, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. Lawrence has a PhD in Geography, Environment and Population from The University of Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. He also holds an MPhil degree in Geography and Rural Development from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree from the University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast, Ghana.

Lawrence research broadly focuses on climate change adaptation, agricultural systems and food security. Specifically, his research utilises an integrated methodological approach in a pragmatic philosophical paradigm to develop understanding of how agricultural systems including smallholder farmers can build resilience to mitigate climate change risks and sustainably improve food security in indigenous societies, particularly in dryland farming systems in sub-Saharan Africa. He has impressive number of co-authored publications in high-ranking journals in areas of climate change, agricultural adaptation, food security and indigenous knowledge systems and applications.

He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses including Introduction to Climatology (GEOG 252), Climatology and Biogeography (GEOG 359), Applied Climatology (GEOG 472), Terrestrial Hydrometeorology (GEOG 471), Environmental Management and Development (GEOG 463), Principles of Sustainable Development (GSD 555), Research Methods in Geography (GEOG 351), Environmental Management Practice (GEOG 609), Techniques of Geographic Research (GEOG 638) and Climate Change Science (GSD 563).

Prior to working at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Lawrence worked as a Sessional Lecturer at The University of Adelaide, and The University of Adelaide College all in Australia, and a Lecturer at the Spiritan University College in Ghana. He also consulted for Out of the Box Executive Pty Ltd in Melbourne, where he analysed climate risks and opportunities of agricultural companies in Australia. Lawrence is a professionally trained teacher with more than ten years of teaching experience at the pre-tertiary education level.

Lawrence has worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Menzies School of Health Research at the Charles Darwin University, Australia to manage a project funded by the National Health and Medical Research Centre (NHMRC) in Australia to understand "Climate preparedness in very remote desert communities" to support the co-design of culturally appropriate adaptation interventions to improve climate change-related health outcomes in Aboriginal communities in Central Australia.

Lawrence is a member of several international associations including the Institute of Australian Geographers, Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand, Ag Institute Australia, and the Healthy Environments and Lives (HEAL) National Research Network in Australia. He is also a member of the Ghana Geographical Association. He has received extensive mentorship education and training from renowned scholars and practitioners in the field of climate change and agrifood systems in Australia. He is a peer reviewer for several high-ranking international journals including Climate and Development, Climatic Change, Climate Services, Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change, Land Use Policy, International Journal for Disaster Risk Reduction, and African Geographical Review.

Lawrence has served on several committees at the department and university levels. He was a member of the 2023 KNUST Research Report Committee representing the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He has previously served as the Convener for Postgraduate Seminars, and the Deputy Sessional Coordinator for Research, Policy and Development in the Department of Geography and Rural Development.

Lawrence is open to effective and committed research collaboration, and consultancy services.

He is available for postgraduate research supervision.
