Profile of Prof. Eric Appau Asante

Prof. Eric Appau Asante is an Associate Professor of Educational Innovations at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana, and a distinguished leader in eLearning, artificial intelligence in education, digital learning, curriculum innovation, and higher education transformation.

He currently serves as Coordinator of Artificial Intelligence Courses at KNUST, where he provides strategic leadership for the University's institution-wide AI education agenda. His work includes the development and rollout of responsible AI courses, AI micro-learning initiatives, faculty and staff capacity building, and the promotion of ethical and discipline-responsive adoption of artificial intelligence across the University. He also serves as Project Lead for the Africa AI Upskilling Programme at KNUST, an initiative involving FATE Foundation, AIMS and support from Google.org, aimed at strengthening AI capacity and skills development across Africa.

Prof. Asante is the Founding and Immediate Past Director of the KNUST E-Learning Centre, which he led from 2021 to 2025. Under his leadership, the Centre developed into a major digital education hub with specialised studios and learning support units, advanced online learning systems, immersive learning facilities, and institution-wide computer-based assessment services. His tenure contributed significantly to the institutionalisation of technology-enhanced learning and the expansion of digital education at KNUST.

Internationally, Prof. Asante is a recognised higher education and digital learning expert. He was named the 2023 Star Ambassador of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and continues to contribute to Commonwealth higher education networks, including as an ACU Ambassador for West Africa, a member of the PEBL West Africa Steering Committee, and a member of the ACU Grants Central Review Panel. He has led and contributed to several international education, digital transformation and capacity-building initiatives involving universities, development organisations and global partners.

He is a Quality Matters Certified Coordinator and Peer Reviewer and has received professional recognition in blended and technology-enhanced learning through the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. He is also a certified trainer and facilitator in e-learning, instructional design, faculty development and digital pedagogy.

Prof. Asante holds PhD from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and a Master's degree in Educational Leadership with a focus on Curriculum Studies from the University of Education, Winneba.

His international studies and professional development include a Graduate Certificate in Instructional Design and Performance Improvement from Arizona State University, USA, and a Certificate in Online Design, Teaching and Learning from Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands. He also holds professional qualifications in education, online pedagogy and technology-enhanced learning.

Prof. Asante previously served as Head of the Department of Educational Innovations in Science and Technology, Programme Coordinator for postgraduate education programmes, and a Board Member of the KNUST Institute of Distance Learning. These roles have given him extensive experience in academic leadership, curriculum development, online programme delivery and institutional transformation.

His teaching and research interests span Curriculum Studies, Educational Innovations, Digital Education, Artificial Intelligence in Education, Instructional Design, Multimedia Learning, Online Assessment, Inclusive Education, Faculty Development and Responsible AI. He has published scholarly articles, essays and research works and has delivered numerous academic and professional presentations at national and international platforms.

Prof. Asante is also an accomplished author of two bestselling books in digital education and eLearning: Maximizing E-Learning in a Constrained Ecosystem and Best Practices in Online Pedagogy: Theory, Research, and Practice. His books draw on research, institutional leadership and practical experience to provide educators, instructional designers and higher education leaders with relevant insights for advancing effective, inclusive and sustainable digital learning.

Prof. Asante's professional praxis is rooted in engaged and transformational education, an approach that sees education not merely as the transmission of knowledge but as a catalyst for innovation, leadership and sustainable societal change.

He continues to lead and contribute to strategic initiatives at the intersection of artificial intelligence, education, digital transformation and international higher education collaboration.
