Profile

BENJAMIN ASAMOAH is a senior lecturer at the Department of Physiotherapy and Sports Science and lead for Sports and Exercise Science. He is a Practitioner Sport Psychologist. He is currently a PhD candidate of Sport Science at the Department of Sport Science, Stellenbosch University, South Africa. His research expertise is within Sports and Exercise Psychology. My primary research interest focuses on the psychological aspects of sports and exercise performance excellence among variety of performers. This research aims to identify the psychosocial factors influencing sports and exercise performance and map the psychological interventional strategies that informs applied sports practitioners, coaches and athletes the theoretical principles underpinning effective psychological training programme which is often lacking within African context. Current collaborations center on understanding what mental toughness is within the Ghanaian football context. Additionally, my interest is focused on employing positive psychological constructs (motivation, confidence, achievement motivation) to improve sports performance. Moreover, my second area of research relates to various factors influencing performance and athlete well-being, such as stress and coping among student athletes and non-athletes, self-presentational concerns, and coach leadership styles. Thirdly, I seek to contribute in promotion of knowledge is the area of “exercise and its effects on physiological and cardiovascular parameters”. In collaborating with my colleagues at the Department, I have carried out studies on the emerging issues on how exercise modifications reduce specific physiological and cardiovascular events. Overall, my research agenda focuses on creating climates that foster enhanced sports and exercise performance among different demographics within the Ghanaian and African context. Moreover, promoting an understanding of the role of social psychological variables in life-time physical activity and sport involvement is a critical interest for me. In a day and age where maintaining an active and healthy population is a preeminent concern, knowledge of the types of environments that promote and sustain psychological and physical health and well-being is of clear importance.
