Profile

Prof. Akwasi Antwi-Kusi is an Associate Professor in the department of anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He is also a  clinically active Anaesthesiologist, Intensivist and Pain management Specialist at the Komfo Anokye teaching Hospital, providing perioperative care with a particular focus on improving patient outcomes after surgery and critical illness. His clinical and research area of interest is in perioperative care and pain management with emphasis on interventional nerve blocks. He is passionate about obstertric anaesthesia and labour pain management. Through his interest and research in pain management, he has been able to change completely the practice of post-operative pain management in Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and other district and regional hospital across Ghana. This has been possible through the writing of pain management protocols and the annual UPDATE IN ANAESTHESIA CONFERENCES which he has been organizing since 2003.

Through his instrumentality, Ghana became the first Hospital in Sub-Saharan Africa to use ultrasound guided nerve blocks for anaesthesia for upper limb surgeries and analgesia for other surgeries. This has led to the adoption of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital as the center for training in ultrasound guided nerve blocks for Africa by the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA). Professor Antwi-Kusi has been the program co-ordinator for this program since it’s establishment in 2014.
