Samuel Oppong began his professional carrier as Agriculturalist but later turned a Natural Resources Scientist with special interest in Range and Wildlife Ecology and Management. His University Academic carrier started in 1984 when he was appointed as a Teaching Assistant at the then Institute of Renewable Natural Resources now the Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources at the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Samuel Oppong taught courses in his area of interest and several key courses in Agroforestry and Geo-information Science.

He had his PhD in Range Sciences at Massey University, New Zealand in 1998. I have conducted several ground breaking research in Wildlife Ecology, Range Ecology, Applied Remote Sensing and GIS, Virology and Biodiversity Assessment. Prof. Oppong is a prolific writer who has published over a hundred and twenty peer reviewed articles in high impact journals and has also reviewed several papers in natural resources.

He has participated in many international and national consultancies, research and development projects in wildlife, agroforestry and forestry issues. Currently, he is the Chair of the Scientific Authority of the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in Ghana, the President of the Ghana Institute of Foresters and Board Member, Forestry Commission of Ghana.
