Past Research Projects

Evaluation and assessment of the efficacy and potential toxicity/ safety of medicinal plants used traditionally for the treatment of diseases of common occurrence in Ghana and the West African region. Research undertaken over the period (2011-2016) include:

  1. Protective effects of Terminalia ivorensis on renal and hepatic damage
  2. Safety assessment on locally used medicinal plants
  3. Effects of Cryptolepis sangunolents and cryptolepine on reproduction in rodents
  4. Protective effects of Spathodea campanulata on acetaminophen and carbon tetrachloride induced liver damage in rodents
  5. Effects of Picralima nitida seed extracts on reproductive and developmental toxicity in rodents
  6. Effects of Carica papaya leaf extract on fertility and hepatic damamge in rodents
  7. Anti-inflammatory and antipyretic actions of selected locally used medicinal plants
  8. Evaluation of potential of the potential of combination therapy of cryptolepine and the artemisinins in the management uncomplicated malaria

Current Research Activities   

  1. The potential of Cryptolepis as a wound healing agent.
  2. Effect of Ivermectin on hepatic damage induced by carbon tetrachloride.
  3. Pharmacotherapy of infertility in Ghana.
  4. Safety of anglo-sedatives used at the intensive care unit (ICU) of KATH.
  5. Hepato-protective and reno-protective activity of Brillantasia nitens in murine mode
  6. Potential benefits of cryptolepis in Covid-19 patients
