Newman Osafo, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Pharmacology at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana. He holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy and a PhD in Pharmacology, both earned at KNUST, and has built his scholarly career around the pharmacological investigation of natural products. His research encompasses drug discovery, the study of inflammation, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders, with a focus on identifying and evaluating novel compounds from natural sources and elucidating the mechanisms through which they exert their therapeutic effects.
A prolific and widely cited researcher, Newman has contributed to more than ninety scholarly works, reflecting both the depth and consistency of his scholarly output. His work commands broad recognition in the international scientific community. He serves on the editorial boards of distinguished journals, including Scientific Reports and the International Journal of Inflammation, and has led and contributed to numerous research projects. He currently supervises multiple PhD and MPhil candidates, while also providing extensive mentorship to undergraduate researchers.
At KNUST, Newman teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in pharmacology, toxicology, and clinical toxicology, and contributes to institutional governance through service on various university committees. His international engagement is equally distinguished: he has served as a visiting scholar abroad and as an external assessor of postgraduate dissertations for universities in Finland and Norway respectively. He has further been appointed as an expert assessor of publication novelty for the United Kingdom Government's Metascience Unit and the University of Sussex. Newman is a member of several leading professional bodies, including the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET), the International Society of Pharmacovigilance (ISoP), the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research (GA), and the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGh).
