  1. CONTRIBUTION TO SCIENCE

Malaria Vaccine Trial:  A malaria vaccine is expected to become one important intervention that would complement existing interventions against the disease. The results of the Malaria Vaccine trial that was conducted in 11 trial sites across 7 African countries is currently undergoing pilot implementation in three African Countries as a recommendation by the World Health Organization I served a Co-Principal Investigator in one of the clinical trial sites that participated in the novel RTS,S malaria  vaccine trial in Africa.

National tuberculosis surveillance in Ghana: The Ghana Tuberculosis Prevalence Survey of 2013 collected information on the prevalence of tuberculosis. Smear-positive cases and inconclusive culture results were confirmed by GeneXpert MTB/RIF. The survey revealed much higher TB disease burden than previously estimated. This implies that the programme needs more effort and resources to find undiagnosed and unreported cases. The higher proportion of smear-negative and asymptomatic TB cases suggests the need to revise the existing screening and diagnostic algorithms. This has led to the roll-over of another programme called Accelerated TB detection programme which has led to equipping and training of physician to improve TB detection and patient management.

Breast Cancer research: Cancer of the breast is the most common malignancy affecting women in many parts of the world. Breast cancer incidence and mortality vary considerably by world regions. In general, the incidence is high (greater than 80 per 100,000) in developed regions of the world and low (less than 30 per 100,000). At the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Kumasi, Ghana, breast cancer forms the highest percentage of cancers (23%) in the annual cancer registry at the oncology unit for the year 2006. In Ghana, there is no established national breast screening program, but there is however increasing awareness through educational campaigns. This awareness has increased the number of women seeking medical help with symptoms of breast disease. It is therefore appropriate for physicians to make good clinical judgment to suspect breast cancer through clinical history and clinical examination to assist in early detection of the disease. The demonstration that clinical diagnosis, ultrasound and mammography can potentially predict breast cancer disease with considerable sensitivity and specificity has gone a long way to improve breast cancer diagnosis and management in my hospital.
