Career Beginnings

 Prof. Nicholas Titiloye is a researcher, educator, clinician, scientist and an administrator at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi with a service period of over 17 years at the University and affiliate Teaching and district Hospitals. He obtained the fellowship certificate of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in the Faculty of Laboratory Medicine, subspecialty of Anatomical Pathology (FMCPath), in 2008, after completing the Academic Residency training with a thesis titled “Pathological features of Primary Epithelial Breast Malignancies in an African Cohort.” His early career training in immunohistochemistry and TMA analysis in Breast Pathology was supported by post-doctoral fellowship Grants from the International Union against Cancer (UICC) -ICRETT at St James Institute of Oncology, University of Leeds Teaching Hospital, UK in 2007 and 2009, respectively, after which he became a life member of the association of Fellows of UICC. He also benefited from mentoring in Cancer diagnosis and genetics at the same institute through travelling grants provided by the British Division of the International Academy of Pathology (BDIAP). He attended a post-doctoral fellowship in Cancer Epidemiologic Genetics at NCI/NIH in 2013, was a Research Scholar at the National Cancer Institute NCI in 2018 and became a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS) in 2019. He graduated as a Medical Doctor from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in 1998, and was admitted to the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) degree of the prestigious University.

 

Academic and Clinical Appointments

He was employed into the service of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology as a lecturer in 2009 and rose through the ranks to become a full Professor in 2023. He was attached as a Clinical Consultant Pathologist to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) from 2009 to 2019. He proceeded on sabbatical as Consultant Pathologist at King Fahd Central Hospital, Jizan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 2019 to 2020, and, on return, was attached to the University Hospital for Clinical Services. He is currently developing a Pathology Consultancy Services model.

Research

His area of specialisation is Anatomical and Molecular Pathology, Breast, Gynaecological and Immune Pathology, an area where, in collaboration with various researchers across the globe, he has conducted studies and published many articles to shed light on the complex biological nature of cancers, through routine morphological features, immunohistochemistry and cutting-edge techniques of gene sequencing. He has contributed knowledge to the role of racial disparity in cancer genome, the use of digital microscopy, artificial intelligence in cancer diagnosis, the role of immune cells and micro-environment in cancer progression and genomic atlas of tumour. He has participated and presented the outcome of his research in many international conferences, locally and across the globe, and has been a reviewer for many scientific journals.

He is a member of international reputable organisations, including USCAP, AORTIC, BDIAP, ASCP, WADIAP, UICC (Geneva), NIH/NCI (USA), NMA and GMA.

 

Collaborations

Professor Titiloye’s scientific publications are products of collaborative research with multiple authors, disciplines and institutions. His current collaborations include reputable Universities across the globe, including the University of Miami and Mayo Clinic in the US, the NIH/NCI in the US, University of Washington Seattle (US), the University of Birmingham and Leeds Teaching Hospital in the UK, and many Universities in Africa. He is currently enrolled in the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative – Breast and Gynaecological malignancies genomic study, SAMBAI Breast study, African American Blood Cancers Consortium, CaPTC - Prostate Cancer, TAGCREC – Gynaecological tumour, and GhaBreast - Ghana Breast Study.

Educator

His teaching duties include General and Systemic Pathology for students in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and other Allied Health Sciences. He also participates in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate theses. He has reviewed both undergraduate and graduate curricula for several Departments at the University as part of developing new programmes.

 

Leadership in Academia and Industry

He was first appointed as the Head of the Pathology Department in 2011, and have since served multiple tenures with transformational changes to the Department in the core areas of Teaching, Research and Services to the community. His initiative in Pathology Consultancy services provided accessible and affordable diagnostic and autopsy services to the University and the Ghanaian community, contributing to the University’s IGR. His infrastructural drive enabled the establishment of a state-of-the-art Pathology Museum, a museum technical room, and the provision of cutting-edge equipment for the Department’s teaching and clinical laboratories. He has served on various University committees in the capacities of Chairperson and Member. The diverse coverage of these committees includes structured academic curricula, university, college, and Departmental policy changes, staff health management, procurement, and staff discipline. He made an indelible contribution to the recently concluded SMS golden anniversary, which has further brought the School of Medical Sciences to the limelight in Ghana as the foremost medical training institution.

At the industry level, he had been Head of the Pathology Unit of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he midwifed concrete changes related to effective body storage and transportation, timely and complete histopathology diagnosis, facilitation of availability of immunohistochemistry for diagnosis, training of all cadres of staff and accreditation of the Department for Postgraduate Residency training.  He was on a sabbatical at the King Fahd Central Hospital, Jizan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from 2019 to 2020 as a Consultant Pathologist. He is registered with Ghana Medical and Dental Council and is in good standing, where he also serves as a continuing professional development (CPD) provider.

 

Hobby and Social Life

He is a lover of nature, an interior decoration enthusiast, a sports enthusiast, a good Christian and happily married.
