Dr. Daniel Opoku is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Public Health in the Deparatment of Health Policy, Management and Economics, KNUST with academic and research experience in Health Systems Digitalization. Daniel is also a Senior Research Scientist affiliated with the University of Bayreuth and the Berlin University of Technology (TU Berlin), both in Germany. He has a specialist interest in the areas of health systems, evidence-based health policy, healthcare industry and regulatory affairs, health technology assessment (HTA), innovative healthcare financing, implementation and evaluation research, and Africa, for digital health technologies, and health care innovations. Daniel is the Director of the BMBF-funded ReachUHC Collaborating Centre hosted by the KNUST and established in partnership with the TU Berlin, mTOMADY gGmbH and the Ghana National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to improve population coverage of national health insurance schemes across Africa using the evidence-based digital health technology-based ReachUHC Automation System for membership. As the (Co-)PI of the ReachUHC projects, Daniel leads, in Ghana and Germany, an international team of Postdoctoral scientists, PhD and Master students working to advance interdisciplinary methods of development, implementation, evaluation and sustainability of digital health technologies as essential tools for health systems transformation in Africa and beyond. At the DAAD-funded German-West African Centre for Global Health and Pandemic Prevention (G-WAC) at the KNUST in Kumasi, Daniel also leads both the Global Digital Health and the Health Systems, Policy and Economics Groups as well as the Academic Training and the Policy Advocacy Units. He stimulates interdisciplinary research training along the One Health approaches. Daniel is involved in several international collaborations, working with reputable institutions at both national and international levels, with funding support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR / formerly BMBF), the German Ministry of Health (BMG), the European Union (EU), the Dutch Organisation for Internationalisation in Education (NUFFIC), and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) among others. He also serves as an Expert Consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) on Health Systems and Policies in Africa. He has extensive experience of coordinating multi-country implementation research to assess the impact of introducing and scaling up evidence-based global public health interventions and health system reforms via different delivery strategies.
