Assessment Framework for IEQ of Classrooms in Basic Schools in Ghana-Review of Data Collection Methods

Abstract

An Indoor Environmental quality assessment framework goes through a number of processes including defining all features of the entity being studied, Review of literature, Data Collection and Analyses and Validation of developed framework. The data collection aspect of the framework encompasses activities that need to be identified and established in the development of an assessment framework for basic schools in Ghana.

The Assessment of IEQ in classroom of basic schools has been undertaken by many researchers. Standards provided by international bodies such as ASHRAE, WHO, European Union, USEPA have spelt out how specific IEQ parameters must be measured. This review identifies the various data collection methods that have been used in assessing IEQ in buildings, (especially school buildings) with focus on classrooms and establishes data collection methodology that can be used in an assessment framework for IEQ in classrooms in basic schools in Ghana.

Author Biographies

Ms. Adwoa Difie Ampadu-Asiamah

Adwoa Difie Ampadu-Asiamah has over 15 years of experience working in Ghana's built environment and is a trained architect. She earned both a Postgraduate Diploma and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from KNUST in Ghana, as well as a Master of Science in Project Management from the University of Greenwich in the United Kingdom. She recently successfully defended her doctoral dissertation at KNUST in Ghana, which was titled "Building Performance Evaluation: An Indoor Environmental Quality Assessment Framework for Classrooms in Basic Schools in Ghana." She is an EDGE Expert, or Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies.

 Her areas of research interest include Indoor Environmental Quality in Buildings, Building Performance Modelling, Sustainable Built Environment, Project Management and Lean Construction.

Prof. Samuel Amos-Abanyie, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology

KNUST. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Building Technology, an MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems and Management from Germany, and Postgraduate and Bachelor of Science degrees both in Architecture from KNUST. He has a certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Management from the Institute of Professional and Executive Development (IPED) in the United Kingdom. He is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment. He is an Associate Member of the Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA) and member in good standing with the Architects Registration Council of Ghana (ARC)

Samuel Amos-Abanyie’s area of research interest is architectural science with focus on climate control in architectural design, building performance modelling, indoor environmental quality, sustainable building design and teamwork in project delivery.

 

Prof. Daniel Yaw Addai Duah, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology

Prof. Daniel Yaw Addai Duah is an Associate Professor of Architecture at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. As a Fulbright Scholar, Daniel completed his PhD in Planning, Design, and Construction from Michigan State University, USA, in December 2013. He also holds an MSc degree in Construction Management and Economics from the University of Greenwich, London, U.K., and Postgraduate and Bachelor of Science degrees, both in Architecture, from KNUST. He has completed extensive research on rural and urban sustainable smart community planning, inclusivity in built environments for sub–Saharan Africa, and academic and industry engagements in research impact projects for the built environment. Areas of specialisation: Sustainable Built Environments, Universal and Smart Built Environments, Green Architecture, Construction Management

 

Prof. Edward Ayebeng Botchway, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology

Prof. Edward Ayebeng Botchway is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture, KNUST, Ghana. He currently teaches Industrial Building Design, Multi-storey Construction and Integrated Technology. He practices as a consulting Architect and has over thirty (30) years of experience in the design and build industry. He is a founder and Board Chairman of the PROJEKT DAVID FOUNDATION Group.

His research areas and specialization are in Architectural Education, Architecture Practice, Construction Project Management and Project Finance, as well as ICT’s utilization in sustainable built environments.

Dr. Kwabena Abrokwa Gyimah, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology

Dr. Kwabena Abrokwa Gyimah is a Building and Environmental Engineer with over 15 years of experience in the building industry. He is currently a Lecturer at the Department of Architecture, KNUST. Due to his passion for research and academia, he adjunctly lectured at the Department of Energy Studies at Yeshua Institute of Technology, Ghana. He has authored and reviewed various articles in the areas of Green Buildings, Building Physics, Sustainable Built Environments and Renewable Energies. His exploits have given him various awards such as Century International Quality Era Award (Gold Category), Developing Solutions Scholar, Erasmus Plus and recently West Africa Built Environment Research (WABER): Outstanding PhD Researcher Award.
