Profile
Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Akosua Andrews is a Lecturer in the Department of Community Dentistry, School of Dentistry, College of Health Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana.
Dr. (Mrs) Andrews holds a PhD and an MPhil in Sociology, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Social Work, from KNUST. She also holds a Diploma in Adult Education from the University of Ghana, Legon.
As a sociologist, she conducts research on the social determinants of health, health-seeking behaviour, access to healthcare, and the psychosocial experiences of patients and their families. Her academic and professional interests focus on the complex relationships among society, health, illness, and healthcare practices.
Her doctoral research examined the experiences of parents of children with cleft lip and palate in Ghana, with particular attention to the emotional, familial, social, and economic challenges associated with the condition and the strategies families employ to cope with them. Her subsequent research has explored the roles of healthcare professionals in cleft care, underscoring the importance of psychosocial support, effective communication, family-centred care, social support, and culturally responsive, multidisciplinary interventions.
Her broader research interests encompass medical sociology, oral health-related behaviours, health inequalities, qualitative research, and the social and psychosocial dimensions of chronic and congenital conditions. She is particularly interested in how socioeconomic circumstances, cultural beliefs, stigma, family dynamics, and community environments shape health-related decisions and experiences of care.
At KNUST, Dr. (Mrs) Andrews contributes to teaching, research, and community engagement in Community Dentistry. She equips dental students with sociological and analytical perspectives that enable them to understand patients within their social contexts and provide compassionate, ethical, and patient-centred care. Prior to her appointment as a lecturer, she spent 26 years in the teaching profession, where she gained extensive experience in instruction, mentoring, learner development, and educational practice.
